UPDATE, Feb. 21, 2014:
Stephen Davis sent us the following update on the campaign via email:
We arrived in Tanzania on January 27, 2014. We began climbing Mount Kilimanjaro on January 28, 2014 via the Machame Route with Kilimanjaro 3 Peaks Adventures (formerly Zara Adventure Tours). We had a guide named Baraka Tarimo, an assistant guide named Emmanuel Tarimo, a cook, a waiter and 6 porters. They all treated us really well and were very kind, helpful, and resourceful throughout.
We climbed for 5 days and then left just before midnight at the end of the 5th day for our summit attempt. We reached the crater rim (Stella Point) at 0500 and then we reached Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 19,340 feet above sea level at 0610, on February 2, 2014, just a couple of minutes before the sunrise. The views as the sun rose were unforgettable. I attach a photo of us with our guides at Uhuru Peak, taken just minutes before sunrise. Baraka is on the left and Emmanuel is on the right.
So far, we have raised $10,012.00 for the JHSA and there have been a few more dollars pledged but not yet received.
Afterwards, we went on a five day safari where we travelled across Northern Tanzania and viewed thousands of wild animals as they carried about their business in their own natural environment.
