This booklet lists resources that are available in Alberta communities for people who have or are at risk of contracting HIV/AIDS or Hepatitis C or who are non-prescription needle users.

How to Use This Booklet:

This booklet is organized in three ways: geographically, by service category and alphabetically. To make the most use of this booklet, follow these two rules:

1. Know your zone.
The first thing you need to know in order to find the correct resource in this booklet is the zone in Alberta that is closest to where your client will be when the resource is needed. Usually, this is the area to which the offender is being released. There is a map on the next page of this booklet that divides Alberta into seven zones.

2. Use the indexes.
To use this booklet most effectively, become familiar with the two indexes that appear on the next few pages and at the back of the booklet.

The first index is an Index by Categories of Service. This index is found after the page outlining the zones. This index is divided into categories that are most commonly required by non-prescription needle users or by people who are infected with HIV/AIDS or Hepatitis C. To use this index, determine the category of service that the client needs and then look up the agencies in your client's zone that are found under that category in the index. The categories of service in the Index by Categories of Service are as follows:

( I ) Needle exchange, availability of other equipment, clean needle source, referral to needle exchange or clean needle source
( II ) Medical Services: Screening/testing, diagnosis, follow up, treatment or referral
( III ) Financial assistance, food, shelter, clothing
( IV ) Referrals to community resources
( V ) Support: Peer, group or comprehensive social support, counselling, advocacy
  ( VI ) Prevention/Education/Information/Awareness
( HEP ) Special services for people who are infected with Hepatitis C
( HIV ) Services are only for people who are infected with HIV
( OFF ) Agency has a special interest in or experience with offenders

The second index is an Alphabetical Index. This index is found at the back of the booklet. If you know the name of an agency that you wish to refer a client to, simply look up the name of the agency in the Alphabetical Index to find out what zone the agency is in and where the agency appears in the booklet.

When you find what you are looking for in the indexes, use the agency's Reference Number to find the agency's listing within the booklet.
