An analysis of the use of the conditio nal sentence of imprisonment in Canada since this new sentencing option was introduced in 1996. Discusses the impact of conditional sentences on incarceration rates, and canvasses a number of interpretational difficulties that have arisen out of the legislation. Includes a discussion of five Supreme Court of Canada cases handed down in 2000, including R. v. Proulx.
